Brighton and Hove Hebrew Congregation Shuls

New Church Road

When you visit us at our New Church Road, you will be visiting the second shul to be built on this site. The first shul was consecrated in 1958 and was inaugurated by the late Chief Rabbi Sir Israel Brodie z"l.

For the last three years we have had services in a number of locations whilst the new shul complete with mikveh was built. Our first Shabbat in the new shul will be on 4th March 2023.

To find the locations of either our new shul or our historic shul in Middle Street, Brighton click on the map link below:

Middle Street Synagogue

Completed in 1875, Middle Street Synagogue was dedicated by the late Chief Rabbi Nathan Adler z"l. The site contained a house for the minister and a mikveh (religious bath). The original building, which was plain by later standards, was designed by Thomas Lainson. However, thanks to the generosity of the Rothschilds, Sassoons and others, the building was adorned until by about 1914 it became one of the most spectacular interiors in Brighton.

Although no longer functioning as a regular place of worship, the synagogue has found a second life as a site for education of adults and children. It is also used for non-secular concerts and weddings are still occasionally held there.

The shul is currrently undergoing urgent repairs to its fabric to ensure that future generations will  enjoy its glorious decorations and become part of its history.
